Leody Taveras up, Robinson Chirinos active

The Rangers have brought outfielder Leody Taveras up from the Alternate Training Site, and Robinson Chirinos has been activated

Texas Rangers transactions: Leody Taveras has been recalled from the Alternate Training Site and Robinson Chirinos has been activated from the injured list, the team announced today. To make room on the active roster, the Rangers have placed Jesse Chavez on the injured list and have designated Rob Refsnyder for assignment.

While Leody made the team out of summer camp as part of the 30 man roster, he appeared in only one game, as a defensive replacement, before being sent out in favor of Adolis Garcia. Taveras returning at this point would seem to indicate that the Rangers are prepared to give him significant playing time in center field, and he will essentially be auditioning for the next month to show whether he’s a viable option to be the team’s center fielder for 2021.

Chirinos’s return was expected, and I thought that Jeff Mathis would be dropped to make room for him, but instead it is Chavez and Refsnyder who go, while Mathis survives for another day. Chavez has a toe issue and is on the injured list retroactive to yesterday. Refsnyder impressed this spring and in summer camp and made the team as a righty bench bat, but he has put up just a 498 OPS.
