Toronto Blue Jays closer Ken Giles needs Tommy John surgery, it was announced today. Giles will miss the 2021 season as a result.

Giles is a free agent after 2020, and prior to the season seemed poised to cash in as one of the best free agent relievers on the market. He has only had a handful of appearances this year, however, and is now sidelined just as he is preparing to hit the market.

Giles originally came up with the Philadelphia Phillies, and was dealt to the Houston Astros after 2015 in a seven player deal that sent Vince Velasquez and Mark Appel (among others) to the Phillies. He was dealt to the Jays in 2018 in the Roberto Osuna deal.

We shall see if Giles signs a two year deal with a team, allowing him to rehab with a club who would then have him for 2022, or if he rehabs on his own then looks to sign a deal in the offseason after 2021 once he shows he is healthy.
