MLB Trade Rumors: Joe Musgrove is headed to the San Diego Padres from the Pittsburgh Pirates, per multiple reports. The Pirates are reportedly receiving in return Hudson Head, Joey Lucchesi, Drake Fellows, Omar Cruz and David Bednar.

Musgrove, 28, is a righthanded starting pitcher who was a supplemental first round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011. A year later he was dealt to Houston in the massive ten player deal that also featured J.A. Happ and Francisco Cordero, among others. The Astros sent Musgrove to Pittsburgh in January, 2018, as part of the Gerrit Cole trade.

Musgrove has a career 4.33 ERA and 3.90 FIP, and had a nice 2020 season, though he was limited to just 8 starts due to a triceps issue. Musgrove is under contract for $4.45 million in 2021, and is under team control through 2022. He gives the Padres an arm to fortify the rotation.

Head is an outfielder who signed for a way above slot $3 million bonus as a third round high school pick in 2019. He’s considered a terrific athlete, and is one of those super toolsy types the Rangers used to always be associated with.

Lucchesi, 27, is a left handed pitcher who was a fourth round pick of the Padres in 2016. He spent most of 2018 and 2019 in the Padres rotation, putting up a roughly league average ERA, but only threw 5 innings over 3 games last season.

Fellows, 22, is a righthanded pitcher who was a sixth round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2019. He has yet to pitch professionally.

Bednar, 26, is a righthanded pitcher who has accumulated a handful of innings in the majors out of the bullpen in 2019-20.

Cruz, 21, is a left handed pitcher who did well in A-ball in 2019.

UPDATE — And reports indicate that Lucchesi is going to the New York Mets, with the Mets sending Endy Rodriguez to Pittsburgh. Rodriguez is a 20 year old switch hitting catcher who has mostly played in the DSL.
