Tyler Phillips, the former Texas Rangers minor leaguer who was lost to the Philadelphia Phillies on a waiver claim in July, 2021, apparently underwent arm surgery, per his Instagram page. Phillips didn’t say what the surgery was, but based on the giant apparatus on his right arm in the photo, elbow surgery would be the safe bet.
The 23 year old Phillips was a 2015 draft pick of the Rangers, and moved up the ladder on the strength of good command and a good change up. Phillips was added to the 40 man roster after the 2019 season, but struggled in both AA and AAA for the Rangers in 2021, while also missing some time due to elbow soreness.
Phillips pitched for the Phillies’ AA team after being claimed on waivers by Philadelphia, but was designated for assignment in mid-September, ultimately being released.
If Phillips had Tommy John surgery, he will miss all of 2022, while other elbow surgeries would potentially allow him to be back in action during the 2022 season.
