Jerry Remy, the longtime Boston Red Sox announcer and former MLB player, died last night, it is being reported. Remy, who was 68, had been battling lung cancer off and on since 2008.
Remy was a Massachusetts native who started his career with the California Angels, spending the 1975-77 seasons as their starting second baseman. After the 1977 season he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for Don Aase, and spent the next seven years with his hometown team, where he was a fan favorite. He ended his career as a .275/.327/.328 hitter with a career bWAR of 14.6.
In 1988 Remy joined NESN as a color commentator for Red Sox broadcasts, and he continued in that role up until August of this year, when he took a leave of absence due his lung cancer treatment. Remy also wrote three books about baseball, as well as a series of children’s books about “Wally the Green Monster,” the Red Sox mascot.
Remy was a beloved figure among Red Sox fans, and he will be missed.
