BoSox/Yanks Wild Card Game Poll

Who ya got?

New York Yankees

At the deadline, I scoffed at the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays being such aggressive buyers, since, when the deadline hit, the Yankees were 3.5 games back of Oakland for the second Wild Card spot, 7 games back of the Rays for the first Wild Card spot, and 9.5 games back of Boston for first place in the American League East, while the Jays were a game behind the Yankees. These teams had no chance at catching up with Boston or Tampa, so they were both essentially fighting what was likely a losing battle to catch Oakland for the WC2 spot.

I ignored Seattle, which was a game ahead of the Yankees, because they were clearly going to fall off, but Oakland usually surges in the second half, and thus I figured the only drama would be whether Boston or Tampa won the East, with the other easily locking up WC1 and Oakland likely having WC2 sewn up by the final weekend.

I was, of course, quite wrong. Boston faded, Oakland collapsed, Seattle hung in the race, and the Yankees and Jays surged, such that the final day of the season saw Boston, New York, Seattle, and Toronto all within a game of each other and all potentially claiming either of the two Wild Card berths.

We ended up with Boston and New York, a pair of 92 win teams, playing tonight at Fenway for the right to square off against the 100 win Rays in the ALDS. Gerrit Cole goes for the Yankees, while Nathan Eovaldi goes for Boston.
