Wakamatsu, Ortiz out as Rangers coaches

Bench coach Don Wakamatsu and hitting coach Luis Ortiz will not return to the major league staff in 2022

MLB: Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Bench coach Don Wakamatsu and hitting coach Luis Ortiz will not be returning to the Rangers coaching staff in 2022, the Texas Rangers announced today. Assistant hitting coach Callix Crabbe and run production coordinator Alex Burg have been told whether they will stay on will be determined by the next hitting coach, and they have been given permission to seek other opportunities. The remainder of the staff has been asked to return, per the beats.

I don’t really have much of a basis for an opinion on what kind of job any of the coaches do, so I’m not really in position to say one way or the other whether these moves are good or bad, or if other coaches should stay or go. That said, coaching staff turnover isn’t uncommon, and after a season like this one it’s even less uncommon.

Wakamatsu was on his second stint with the Rangers, having been on the coaching staff previously from 2003-07, and then returning in 2018. Ortiz was hired as part of Chris Woodward’s coaching staff when Woodward was hired after the 2018 season, having spent the previous year as a hitting coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
