As we all know, the Texas Rangers have signaled that, as part of their goal to be exiting from full on rebuilding in 2022 and move towards being decent, with an eye towards being a legitimate contender in 2023, their intent is to be aggressive in the free agent market this offseason. And that specifically includes being in on the top free agents in the market — something that, Jon Daniels acknowledged, hasn’t generally been the case in recent years.
This has resulted in a certain amount of debate on here and elsewhere about the likelihood of the Rangers landing a big fish, with a number of folks seemingly being firmly in the “the owners aren’t really going to spend” camp. There have been significant disagreements about whether the Rangers will sign a premium free agent. So I decided to do a poll on the subject.
Now, the term “premium” is inherently subjective, and I don’t want this to turn into a semantic debate. Thus, the question for this poll is whether the Rangers will sign any of the following free agents, who I am defining as “premium” for purposes of this poll:
Carlos Correa
Corey Seager
Marcus Semien
Freddie Freeman
Marcus Stroman
Kris Bryant
Robbie Ray
Kevin Gausman
Javy Baez
Max Scherzer
Nick Castellanos
Trevor Story
Noah Syndergaard
Michael Conforto
Clayton Kershaw
Justin Verlander
Zack Greinke
You can quibble with this list and say the old former aces aren’t really “premium” free agents at this stage in their career. You could also say Conforto isn’t good enough to be a “premium” free agent, or that Chris Taylor or Starling Marte or some others should be included. I get that. But a line has to be drawn somewhere, and this is where I’ve drawn it, and I feel comfortable with where it is.
