MLB Trade Rumors: The Boston Red Sox would be dealing Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals in a three way deal that also involves the New York Mets, and that is close to being finalized, per reports.
Benintendi, a 26 year old left handed hitting outfielder, was the 7th overall pick in the 2015 draft (yes, the Dillon Tate draft) out of the University of Arkansas. He came in second in the American League Rookie of the Year balloting in 2017, and then had a 4.5 bWAR 2018 season, at which point he seemed to be a budding star.
He slumped in 2019, however, putting up a 1.8 bWAR, and then cratered in 2020, putting up a 442 OPS in 14 games. With the Red Sox shifting into a reload/rebuild mode and Benintendi having two years left, he was rumored to be on the block, and it appears the Royals are buying.
Jeff Passan says that Khalil Lee would be going to the Mets in this deal, with Franchy Cordero heading to Boston, but the other pieces are still unknown.
UPDATE — Per Jeff Passan, the deal is Benintendi to the Royals, Khalil Lee to the Mets, and Franchy Cordero and two players to be named later going from Kansas City to Boston, along with Josh Winckowski and a player to be named later going from the Mets to Boston.
