The Texas Rangers will not have any announcements on their roster today, per the beat guys. Opening Day is tomorrow, April 1, and the deadline for finalizing rosters is 11 a.m. Central.
The Rangers currently have 39 players on their 40 man roster, with two players who have previously been said to have made the team, Matt Bush and Charlie Culberson, needing to be added to the 40 man roster. Rougned Odor will either be traded or designated for assignment by tomorrow morning’s deadline, which would open up a 40 man roster spot.
Assuming Bush and Culberson do make the team, Texas still has one final spot on its 26 man roster to fill. They could recall a pitcher who has previously been optioned, as Brett Martin, Joely Rodriguez, Demarcus Evans and Brock Burke are all expected to start the season on the injured list, which would all the team to recall a player without regard to how long they have been optioned. It’s also possible that the Rangers will have Martin, who pitched multiple times the final week of spring training, on the active roster.
My guess is that the delay is finalizing is that they are scouring the waiver wire and the phone lines to see if someone they like ends up waived or traded due to being out of options, or if there’s a possible trade of bad contracts involving Rougned Odor that they would pull the trigger on. Or maybe a team has decided they have to have Joey Gallo a before the season starts. Who knows.
