The Texas Rangers scored four runs and the San Diego Padres scored seven runs.
There was no no-hitter tonight so that was an improvement. On the other side of the coin, for the first time this season, the tandem starter bit didn’t provide successful results for the Rangers.
The first part of the pair — Jordan Lyles — allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with two dingers allowed in 4 1⁄3 innings. Lyles collected just one strikeout on the evening with Texas giving him nearly 80 pitches tonight.
Wes Benjamin followed as expected and he allowed two runs on three hits (including the eventual game-winning dong off the bat of Trent Grisham) and a couple of walks. In Benjamin’s two innings of work, he struck out one batter in his 41-pitch effort.
As for the bats, they did indeed get a hit. In fact, it was a bountiful night in Texas as they collected seven hits in total. Before the Padres eventually overtook them, the Rangers held leads of 3-0 and 4-3 but the tandem proved not as tantalizing tonight which means the Padres have wrapped up a series victory before tomorrow afternoon’s finale.
Player of the Game: Isiah Kiner-Falefa has had a decent start to the 2021 campaign in the leadoff spot and tonight he went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBI. On the season, IKF is slashing .273/.314/.515 which makes him one of the team’s bright spots thus far.
Up Next: The Rangers and Padres close out this series with a matinee matchup where righty starter Mike Foltynewicz will look to rebound from his outing in the home opener. San Diego will counter with LHP Adrian Morejon with a chance to sweep the home team in the finale.
Tomorrow’s first pitch from The Shed is scheduled for 1:35 pm CT.
