The Texas Rangers have officially activated Brock Holt and Willie Calhoun from the injured list. To make room for the pair on the active roster, the Rangers have optioned infielder Anderson Tejeda and pitcher Wes Benjamin to the Alternate Training Site.
The swap of Holt for Tejeda was to be expected — when Holt went on the injured list, the expectation was that he would only miss the minimum, and Tejeda was called up to take his place on the roster, since the Rangers, with Holt out, needed an infielder. Tejeda was 1 for 17 with 10 Ks during his time up, and will presumably be with either Round Rock or Frisco when the minor league season starts in early May, barring another injury requiring him to return.
With Benjamin going down for Calhoun, the Rangers have a four man bench now. Leody Taveras has struggled and is sitting today, with Adolis Garcia starting in center field, so I thought Leody might be going down, but it is the lefty Benjamin instead. Benjamin had been paired with Jordan Lyles as part of a tandem starter setup, but in his last outing walked four of the eight batters he faced, and hasn’t been sharp his last couple of times out. It remains to be seen whether Lyles will move into a traditional starter role, or if another lefty, such as Kolby Allard or John King, will be paired with him.
