Luis Robert has suffered a complete tear of his hip flexor, the Chicago White Sox announced today. While a decision has not been made on treatment, the team says that at a minimum Robert will not participate in baseball activities for 12-16 weeks.

This is a big blow for a team that aggressively moved this offseason to try to win in 2021. The 22 year old center fielder had an 822 OPS this year, after finishing second in the American League Rookie of the Year balloting last year and winning a Gold Glove. The White Sox, who were somewhat lacking in outfield depth coming into 2021, lost Eloy Jimenez right before the season started with a torn pectoral tendon that is expected to sideline him for most of the season. With Robert now being out, Chicago is looking at Leury Garcia or Billy Hamilton taking over as their regular center fielder.
