Mother’s Day minor league games saw both Down East and Round Rock finish out sweeps and go undefeated for the first week of the minor league season.
2018 4th rounder Mason Englert made his pro debut for Down East, going 3 innings in his start and allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5. Evan Carter continued to impress, going 3 for 4 with a double, a walk and an HBP. Jose Rodriguez went 3 for 5, Dustin Harris had a pair of hits, Keyber Rodriguez had a hit and two walks, and Luisangel Acuna had a walk and a stolen base.
Hickory logged just four hits today, one by David Garcia, who also drew a walk. Pedro Gonzalez doubled. Ronny Henriquez gave up a three run home run in the first then threw 3 shutout innings after that, finishing with 6 Ks against 1 walk and 2 hits.
Frisco won 4-1 with some sterling pitching performances. Tim Brennan started and had a scoreless first, A.J. Alexy allowed just a single hit — a home run — in 3 innings with 2 walks and 2 Ks, Joe Gatto allowed a hit and no walks in 3 scoreless while striking out 4, and Fernery Ozuna struck out 2 in 2 innings to close out the game. Davis Wendzel had a walk and 2 HBPs, Bubba Thompson had a hit, and Ryan Dorow had a pair of hits.
For Round Rock, Demarcus Evans went 1.2 and allowed 2 runs on a pair of home runs while striking out three. Joe Barlow relieved Evans and went the final 1.1, retiring all four batters he faced, two by strike out.
Jason Martin homered, Delino DeShields each had a single and a double, and Carl Chester and Curtis Terry each picked up a hit.
Two bits of bad news today — Sherten Apostel left todays Frisco game with what is though to be some sort of leg muscle cramp or strain or something, and Owen White will, per Scott Lucas, be out until at least mid-June with a broken bone in his hand.
