The Rangers have brought up an extra catcher due to Jose Trevino’s unavailability

Texas Rangers catcher Jose Trevino is going to be unavailable for a few days after slipping and injuring himself this morning, the team announced.

In order to have a healthy backup catcher on the roster, the Rangers have purchased the contract of John Hicks from AAA Round Rock. To clear a spot on the active roster, the Rangers have optioned Jason Martin to AAA Round Rock. To clear a spot on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated pitcher Shaun Anderson for assignment.

Presumably Trevino is only going to miss a few days, or else he would have been placed on the injured list. Martin was going to likely be sent down when David Dahl is activated from his rehab assignment, which should be soon (he’s playing for Frisco tonight), so this has him heading out a little earlier than expected. In the meantime, the Rangers are effectively playing with a two man bench — Hicks and Charlie Culberson.

Anderson had been claimed on waivers from the Twins on June 18, and had two scoreless appearances for Round Rock. Texas will now try to run him through waivers and outright him.
