The Texas Rangers have called up Curtis Terry from AAA Round Rock and have activated catcher Jose Trevino from the injured list. To make room for Terry on the 26 man and 40 man rosters, the Rangers have designated John Hicks for assignment. To make room for Trevino on the active roster, the Rangers have optioned Nick Solak to AAA Round Rock.
We heard last night that Terry was expected to be activated for today’s game, so that is no surprise. The 24 year old 1B/DH has had a breakout year in AAA after previously never playing above A ball. He will most likely get fairly regular playing time at the DH spot.
Similarly, Trevino being activated and Hicks being designated for assignment is no surprise. Hicks was added to the roster when Trevino was injured, and the expectation has been that he would be DFA’d once Trevino returned.
Solak being sent down answers the final question about a roster spot. Solak started the year well, but has struggled significantly over the past couple of months, particularly against righthanded pitchers. He’s a bat first guy, so not hitting is obviously a problem. I suspect we will hear that the team still thinks Solak is part of their future, but they want him to go to AAA and try to get things figured out with less pressure on him.
