Gallo to Yankees, per reports

Joey Gallo is an extremely late scratch from tonight’s game, and so he may be on the move

MLB trade rumors: Joey Gallo was scratched roughly ten minutes before Wednesday Texas Rangers game, as the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees reportedly continue to pursue Gallo in advance of Friday’s trade deadline. Levi Weaver says Gallo is heading to the New York Yankees.

This is obviously a developing situation and nothing happens until it happens, but it appears that the trigger has been pulled. The Rangers homegrown star, who pleaded publicly, repeatedly, to stay with the Rangers, apparently is being shipped out.

I am not going to try to speculate as to who Texas may be getting, but whatever the deal is, I’m not going to like it because it will still mean Joey Gallo is no longer a Texas Ranger.

UPDATE — Multiple reports are saying a deal with the Yankees sending Gallo to New York is being finalized, pending review of medicals.

I’m going to be very sad for a while.

UPDATE II — I’ve seen a report that Clarke Schmidt is going to Texas in this deal. Schmidt is a 25 year old pitcher who was the Yankees first round pick in 2017, and has missed most of the year due to a non-ligament elbow issue. He was in the top 100 coming into this season on the BP, BA, and Pipeline lists.

UPDATE III — John King is also going to the Yankees in this deal, per reports.

UPDATE IV — Trevor Hauver and Ezequiel Duran are being reported as coming to Texas from the Yankees.

Hauver was the Yankees third round pick in 2020 out of Arizona State. He’s a lefthanded hitting second baseman who is slashing .288/.445/.498 for the Yankees’ low-A affiliate, with 64 walks and 78 Ks in 299 plate appearances.

Duran, 22, is a righthanded hitting middle infielder who is slashing .290/.374/.533 for high-A.

UPDATE V — Glenn Otto and Josh Smith are being reported to be going to Texas. Otto is a righthanded pitcher from Rice whose injury history likely makes him a reliever long term. He is 25 and was recently promoted to AAA. He has a 3.33 ERA in 75.2 IP over 13 appearances with 115 Ks and 17 walks.

Josh Smith was the Yankees second round pick out of LSU in 2019. He is a lefty shortstop slashing .324/.448/.641 in 39 games between low-A and high-A. That seems pretty good. He turns 24 in August.

UPDATE VI — It is appearing Schmidt is not in the deal. Everson Pereira and Randy Vasquez are the two other names that are being said to be going to Texas.

Pereira is a 20 year old center fielder tearing up low-A in 17 games this year, slashing .400/.468/.673.

Vasquez is a 22 year old pitcher who has spent most of the year in low-A, with 66 Ks and 25 walks in 55 IP.

UPDATE VII — Per J.J. Cooper, on the updated Yankees list for BA, Duran and Smith were both in the top 10, at 6 and 8, respectively. Otto and Hauver were at 20 and 22. No mention from him on where Pereira is.
