The Texas Rangers, as expected, called up A.J. Alexy from Round Rock to make Monday’s start. Not as expected, the Rangers also activated pitcher Joe Barlow from the 10 day injured list. Barlow had been on the i.l. with a blister. To make room for Barlow and Alexy, the Rangers returned Jake Latz to AAA Round Rock and placed Andy Ibanez on the 10 day injured list.
Latz was brought up because of a COVID outbreak and so, under the new rules for 2021, he is able to be removed from the 40 man roster and returned to the minors without having to be exposed to waivers. Ibanez suffered a hamstring injury on Saturday which, it was indicated after that game, would likely land him on the injured list, so this isn’t a surprise.
More moves would appear to be imminent. Alexy is going back to Round Rock tomorrow, and it appears likely that he was be replaced by someone coming off the COVID-19 injured list, either Charlie Culberson or Jonah Heim. A position player will be returned as well if they are both activated, most likely Ryan Dorow.
