MLB Rumors: Sonny Gray and the St. Louis Cardinals are in agreement on a deal, per multiple reports. Ken Rosenthal has it as a 3 year, $75 million deal.
Gray was sent to the Minnesota Twins from the Cincinnati Reds after the 2021 season in exchange for the Twins’ 2021 first rounder Chase Petty. Gray followed up a nice season in 2022, albeit one where he was limited to 24 starts, with a strong 2023 campaign that saw him put up a 2.79 ERA in 184 innings over 32 starts, finishing second in the American League Cy Young Award voting and leading the majors with a 2.83 FIP.
The Cardinals came into the offseason hurting for starting pitching. Last week, they landed a couple of lower-tier starting pitchers in Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. Gray now gives them someone who is a higher caliber guy to slot into the rotation.
In our Sonny Gray poll last week, a slight majority of folks said they’d want the Rangers to do a 3 year, $69 million deal with Gray. Gray did a little better than that with the Cards.
