Free agent Martin Perez and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a one year, $8 million deal, per multiple reports.
Perez spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Rangers, signing with Texas on a one year, $4 million deal prior to the 2022 season, then accepting the qualifying offer for 2023 after a very strong campaign.
Perez wasn’t able to replicate his success in 2023. The 32 year old lefty got bumped to the bullpen in mid-August, and all three of his playoff appearances involved him being brought in to finish out games that the Rangers were losing. Perez finished the regular season with a 4.45 ERA and 4.99 FIP in 141 innings.
The Rangers had some interest in bringing Perez back, but I’m guessing they were offering about half of what the Pirates offered, with some potential innings pitched incentives. Perez will instead look to provide stability to the Pirates rotation for 2024.
