MLB Rumors: Shohei Ohtani will sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to J.P. Hoornstra of Dodgers Nation. Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet Canada says, on the other hand, that the Blue Jays are a finalist, but no decision has been made.
Ohtani, generally considered the most coveted free agent in MLB history, hit the free agent market after a season where he was the unanimous Most Valuable Player, led the majors in OBP, slugging and bWAR, and put up a 3.14 ERA in 132 innings. He also basically didn’t play the final month of the season due to a combination of injuries and his team, the Anaheim Angels, being out of the playoff race by September 1.
After six straight seasons of finishing below .500 with the Anaheim Angels, Ohtani reportedly was prioritizing going to an organization where he would be able to win. The Los Angeles Dodgers were generally considered the favorites to sign him, but the Toronto Blue Jays emerged as serious contenders as well, with reports surfacing that Ohtani expressed an interest during the 2023 season in potentially playing for the Dodgers or Jays.
